Why is the indicator clicking ?

Before the 80s, electromechanical switches (relays)
were built into direction indicators so that the power
supply for the lights was interrupted and connected.
By doing this the lamps flashed. But with every interruption
and connection of the power, there was a click-sound,
which came from this relay.

The indicators today work electronically and are
absolutely noiseless. Even the silence in modern
vehicles is a blessing  (because of sound-absorbing
material and better technology), the clicking of the
indicators is really important for traffic safety.

The click-sound now is made artificial and with super
small speakers not only audible, but also acoustically
pleasant for the the ear.

Therefore we can still hear the click-sound.

Thus, the driver is not only noticing that he put
the signal on, but also that he forgot to put it off.
