Every driver knows that it is a general duty to wear a seatbelt
in the car. The majority of the drivers and even the passengers
also adhere to this rule. (at least an estimated share of 98% ).
According to the UDV (Accident Research of Insurers), around
200 people were killed each year in Germany, because they were
not belted.
About 1,500 people were seriously injured during the same period.
If the insurance company provide evidence that using the seat belt
would not have resulted in death or such injuries to the occupant,
which would mean lower doctor and hospital costs. Then in this case
the insurance company can reclaim part of the costs.
The injured person’s claims for compensation for pain and suffering
can also be reduced or even omitted completely.
Therefore you should always fasten your seat belt,
even on short journeys.
