My friend is travelling for the first
time to germany as a tourist.
Can he drive here with his
indian driving licence?
According to §29 FEV(german law for permissions),
holders of foreign driving licenses may drive
a motor vehicle exactly to the extent that
they are allowed to drive in their country they are coming from.
This means: If the tourist has the class B (car),
he can drive here the class B vehicles, for his duration.
He doesn`t has to have a translation of the driving license,
if he has the international driving licence.
Federal Republic of Germany renounce translations
with the following countries:
Andorra,
Hongkong,
Monaco,
New Zealand,
San Marino,
Switzerland,
Senegal,
If you have to take with you a translation, because your driving licence
is not from one of these countries mentioned above, or you don’t have
the international driving licence. So, in that
case it’s better, when you get a translation from an officially
recognized translator before you travel to germany.
Please pay attention:
The driving licence has to be valid and must not be expired.
Besides it must not be a Learners or Provisionally issued driving licence.
If the holder of a driving license from another country, has a regular
residence in this country, the entitlement is only for six months. But
here is only one exception: The license authority may extend the
time on request up to one year if the applicant can prove that he
will not reside in Germany for more than twelve months.
